About Us

IT'S JUST A THOUGHT ...

Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900),
playwright, poet and author

"No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist."

"While we look to the dramatist to give romance to realism, we ask of the actor to give realism to romance."

"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being."

"I have nothing to declare except my genius."

"A man's face is his autobiography. A woman's face is a work of fiction."

On refusing to make alterations to one of his plays, "Who am I to tamper with a masterpiece?"

"Imagination is a quality given to man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humour to console him for what he is."

"Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes."

"Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative."

"Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much."

"It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious."

"We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars."

"Pessimist: One who, when he has the choice of two evils, chooses both."

Theatr Colwyn has been at the heart of the community life of Colwyn Bay since the 1880's. Many of our members have happy memories of the theatre through their involvement with amateur drama. If you would like to read more about the history of the theatre, please click here.

The Friends of Theatr Colwyn support group consists of 2 types of member:

Friends who join by annual subscription, and
Volunteers who join by giving their time as Stewards at the Theatre

The Friends - We Help

Our Volunteer Stewards give invaluable assistance at all the theatre shows welcoming customers, showing them to their seats, serving icecream, selling merchandise. Some of our Volunteers also assist serving drinks at the bar and assisting with DIY (building/painting).

Carrie, one of our valued Stewards, was featured on the BBC website.

The Friends - We Meet Together

We like to extend a warm welcome to everyone who attends our social events throughout the year. A Coffee Morning is arranged on the first Tuesday of every month in the bar at the theatre - come along and meet us, we're a friendly bunch as you can see from our photo. Sometimes we run out of chairs but the more is definitely the merrier!

Other social events are held regularly throughout the year. Full details are circulated in the monthly newsletter.

The Friends - We Raise Funds and We Give

Through our fundraising efforts we have been able to donate funds for projects at the theatre:

a new carpet in the bar
lighting for the canopy
a dishwasher for the bar
an updated CCTV system (donation of £895 out of seat sponsorship funds)
a new recording studio (donation of £100)
new tabs (donation of £500)
2 chaser lights to enhance performances on stage (£450)
paint to rejuvenate the front of the theatre (thanks to Ray for the hard work!)

One of the ways in which we have raised money is through our Seat Sponsorship Scheme. To sponsor a plaque costs only £50 for 4 years and you can show your support for the theatre throughout the year. Click here for an application form which can be printed off and sent to us.

The Friends - We're Official

The Friends of Theatr Colwyn were officially constituted in October 2003. Our very active committee meets once a month. For a copy of our constitution, please click here.
